It is an iconic exhibition in the form of a house entirely made of biobased materials, circular construction methods and stories about the changing value chain it is part of. This life-size biobased house stimulates all the senses and shows the circular future.
The exhibition installation can be visited live and online. It contains more than 100 natural building materials. “We show the endless, potential material streams that are available and not or hardly used in the building world. For example, materials from food, seaweed, (sewage) water, earth, funghi or even our own living environment. Materials from today, tomorrow and the day after,” explains designer Pascal Leboucq of Biobased Creations. “You walk through the house and can see, feel and smell all the materials. Each room has its own story.”
All rooms and materials have a QR code that gives access to background information. During the DDW, storytellers will be present to take visitors into the new world of circular construction and answer their questions. It is also possible to visit the house digitally. “In this way, our biobased house is accessible to everyone,” says Lucas De Man, director of Biobased Creations.
The Exploded View Beyond Building is the result of collaboration and research by builders, producers, farmers, scientists, designers, governments, knowledge institutes, storytellers and artists united in The Embassy of Circular & Biobased Building. Together they work on new perspectives for sustainable (circular and biobased) building and living; a circular living environment. They research the possibilities of new bio-based materials with a high design quality and circular building methods such as detachability and modularity. They also look at how more worlds than just the building world can be influenced when designing and building differently.
Dutch Design Week is organised from 16 to 24 October 2021 in Eindhoven. The Exploded View Beyond Building can be visited for free during the DDDW at the Ketelhuisplein/ Strijp-S. There is also a scale model of the house: The Exploded View – Materials and Methods, on display at DDW in The New Block at Strijp-S.
