‘Bio-based chemicals are essential for making the chemical industry more sustainable and reducing CO2 emissions, as they can replace fossil raw materials. However, there are still many challenges hindering the development of green chemistry. That is why the government and industry have asked ChemistryNL to form a committee of independent experts. This committee should develop a concrete action agenda focusing on the availability of biobased feedstock, processing technologies for the right applications, regulation and economic feasibility.’
The committee will draw on existing studies, advisory reports, implementation programmes and initiatives within the biobased economy. In addition, stakeholders will be involved in validating the action agenda. Consultancy firm Berenschot is guiding the process.
According to ChemistryNL, the development of the action agenda is an important step in the joint efforts of the government and industry to give the Netherlands a leading position in the sustainability of the chemical industry and the transition to a circular economy. The committee’s results will contribute to the government’s new biocarbon strategy, the transition path for sustainable carbon use in chemistry (to be presented to the Lower House this autumn) and the Action Plan Supply Sustainable Carbon Carriers, in which the import of biocarbons plays an important role.
The final result is expected before summer 2025. The full list of committee members will be announced soon. For more information, visit ChemistryNL
