Currently, fossil carbon sources such as oil, natural gas and coal meet 90-95% of the sector’s needs. However, the research shows that biobased solutions can play an important role in building a more sustainable, circular and competitive economy. Europe’s biobased industry is positioned to lead this transformation and provides a roadmap for policymakers and industry leaders to scale up biomass use, drive innovation and shape supportive policies.
Dirk Carrez, executive director of the BIC, stresses the importance of this transition: “The biobased industry can contribute significantly to the changes needed for a competitive, sustainable and circular chemicals and materials sector by 2050. Obtaining sufficient biomass will be a key element for this transformation.”
The study outlines key steps to achieve this goal, including expanding biomass supply chains, investing in new technologies, promoting rural development and improving sustainability practices. It also highlights the opportunity for European policymakers to strengthen global competitiveness and strategic autonomy by supporting the bio-based industrial ecosystem.
