STRONGBIONET connects European bioeconomy networks

Europe already has a large number of regional, national and sectoral initiatives in the field of the bioeconomy. However, many of these networks operate largely independently of one another. As a result, knowledge, contacts and facilities are not always utilised to the full, and opportunities for cross-border cooperation remain untapped.

STRONGBIONET aims to change this through a so-called ‘network of networks’ approach. The project connects existing initiatives and brings together stakeholders from research, industry, policy, education, funding and civil society. The aim is to create a more cohesive European ecosystem in which knowledge exchange, innovation and policy dialogue can take off more easily.

Central hub

The project has a budget of €4.4 million and will run until May 2029. One of the key outcomes will be a digital collaboration platform designed to function as a central hub for the European bioeconomy. Users will have access to knowledge, contacts and support resources.

The platform will feature separate sections dedicated to, amongst other things, networking, education and skills development, contacts with investors, and the dialogue between science and policy. This should enable researchers, businesses, policymakers and financiers to connect with one another more quickly.

In addition, STRONGBIONET is establishing thematic Communities of Practice. These provide a forum for experts and other stakeholders to exchange experiences and work together on specific issues. The project is also developing education and training activities, strengthening links between innovative companies and investors, and aiming to ensure that scientific knowledge is better utilised in policy-making.

According to the project consortium, collaboration is essential to further grow the European bio-economy. “The European bio-economy is built on knowledge, innovation and collaboration. STRONGBIONET strengthens the links between existing networks and creates new opportunities for stakeholders to collaborate, share expertise and accelerate the transition to a sustainable bio-economy.”

STRONGBIONET is coordinated by SPRING, the Italian cluster for the circular bio-economy. The project aligns with the objectives of the European Bio-economy Strategy and aims to contribute to a more sustainable, competitive and resilient European economy.
