The new European project BIOMODEL4REGIONS will improve the decision-making process in the field of bioeconomy at local and regional level. This will be done by setting up a governance structure that provides better information, building on the knowledge and experience of years of research and studies.

The new governance structure will be demonstrated in 6 pilot regions, taking into account the diverse areas, their conditions and assets and different sectors (forestry, agrifood, aquatic biomass and organic fraction of municipal solid waste).

The six regions are represented by the following clusters:

  • Circular Biobased Delta Foundation (CBBD), the Netherlands
  • Bioeconomy Cluster (Bec), Slovakia
  • Biofuel Region Bfr Ab (Bfr), Sweden, a forestry cluster
  • Cluster Viooikonomias Kai Perivallontos Dytikis Makedonias (CluBe), Macedonia, Greece, Cluster Bioeconomy & Environment Western Macedonia
  • Spring Sustainable Processes And Resources For Innovation And National Growth (SPRING), Italy
  • Stowarzyszenie Zachodniopomorski Klaster Chemiczny Zielona Chemia (WPCC), Poland, Chemical Cluster Zielona

Consortium partner Wageningen University & Research (WUR) will analyse social and economic drivers and barriers and also collaborate on a proposal for new business models, which contribute to socially and ecologically responsible behaviour.

According to project leader Patrizia Circelli, BIOMODEL4REGIONS will support the development of new biobased economic strategies and blueprints, which should lead to a better-informed decision-making process, social engagement and innovation. This is important in the context of objectives such as the European Green Deal and the EU strategy for a biobased economy.

BIOMODEL4REGIONS is funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme. More information can be found on the website.
