It is perhaps the least sexy footwear in the world, yet over 700 million pairs of Crocs have been sold in less than 20 years. The comfortable clogs made of soft foam plastic can soon be worn with a bit more pride, as US parent company Crocs Inc. has announced that they will be 100% biobased by the end of the year.

Traditional Crocs consist of ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl marketed under the brand name Croslite. Up to now, EVA has been produced entirely from fossil raw materials (petroleum), but in its aim to be fully climate-neutral by 2030, Crocs Inc. is now switching to bio-based raw materials. In addition, the company is working on introducing its own clog recycling programme. After all, Crocs are indestructible. They cannot be processed in conventional industrial recycling plants and are also not biodegradable.
