The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated 8 March as 'National Biobased Products Day': an annually repeated day designed to raise awareness of biobased products - how they are made, what they are made of, their many benefits and the wide variety of products already available for use in the home, office, playground, construction sites and landscaping.

National Biobased Products Day is an initiative of the Department’s Biopreferred programme, which encourages all companies and organisations within the broad field of the bioeconomy to participate in the event and involve customers, employees, stakeholders, partners and community members in the celebration.

The Biopreferred incentive programme aims to increase the purchase and use of biobased products, thus stimulating economic development, creating new jobs and creating new markets for agricultural commodities. Part of these efforts includes setting a mandatory minimum share of biobased content for some federally purchased products. In this respect, the US seem to be running ahead of the European Union.
