The Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) has started producing a new round of country reports. These reports give an overview of the development and potential of the biobased industry of several European countries, in particular in Central and Eastern Europe. Newly published country reports from Romania and Poland show that they are boosting the biobased industry.

Strategic initiatives such as the country reports and the Widening Strategy (‘Widening’) launched by CBE JU in 2023 contribute to this. The role of organisations like the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) and the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) is crucial in promoting participation in biobased activities in Europe, even in countries that are not yet scoring very high on the European Commission’s annual innovation index.

Indeed, the countries and regions concerned are often very rich in biomass streams that are useful for industry, but hardly exploited yet. According to BIC’s Nelo Emerencia, who is closely involved in the country reports, this is mainly caused by the fact that diverse industry sectors do not know each other and consequently cooperation is low. ‘That inhibits growth. To really establish a biobased industry, we need to break down the barriers and involve all sectors.’ The creation of country reports, and all the contacts back and forth that go with them, seem to encourage involvement and awareness.
